This mansion may be considered as the building most representative
of art in the times of the Catholic Monarchs. As in the culture of fifteenth
century Spain, Gothic, Moorish and Italianate lines have all been fused
together. Its Founder was Dr. Rodrigo Arias and its ornamental motif includes
scallop shells, the symbol of the Order of Santiago, of which Rodrigo Arias
was Chancellor.
The windows of the ground floor are protected
by beautiful wrought-iron work, which has been deemed “the most beautiful
of Gothic Spanish iron-work”. The stairway, ceilinged by Italianate decorative
woodwork, is a striking feature of the inside.
