Construction of this Baroque monument was impelled by
the wishes of Queen Margarita de Austria, the wife of Felipe III. It was
begun in 1617, when the king engaged the services of that great architect
Juan Gómez Mora.
The façade, conceived with grandeur, cannot
be seen in its entirety from the front. The towers are among the most beautiful
examples of the Baroque in Spain.
Inside are the chapel and its altarpieces, the Baroque
courtyard and several sculptures.
