Constructed during the sixteenth, seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries, together with that of Segovia, it offers one of the
last manifestations of the Gothic. The luminous height at which sight vanishes
when one’s gaze directed at this Cathedral is one of its most striking
features.
Outside, the temple profers the splendid organization
of the end of the Gothic; the impression of a set is grandiose owing to
its elevation and flourishing upward-trending style with frond-like
ornamentation characterizing the main façade and the Puerta del
Obispo and the Puerta de San Clemente and the Puerta de Ramos and the Puerta
del Crucero on the north end.
Inside the decoration is rich and elegant. The vault corresponding
to the main alter is sumptuously decorated in polychrome. The painting
is the work of Juan Montejo. The choir in the main aisle is by Alberto
Churriguera. The Plateresque organ was constructed in 1568 by Damián
Luis and the Churrigueresque organ dates from 1745. The main alter and
different side chapels, such as the Capilla dorada, the Capilla del Sudario,
the Capilla de San Roque and the Capilla de la Virgen de la Soledad, among
others, are outstanding.
